The Lebanese trip ended with a proctoring session at the Hôtel-Dieu de France in Beirut. Prof. Mauro Cassese is one of the pioneers of aortic valve replacement surgery using the TAVI technique. TAVI is a relatively recent but well-established procedure, thanks to the work of proctors such as Cassese, who have been disseminating it across all continents, as you can see by looking at the proctoring map on this website.

The TAVI technique allows surgeons to avoid incisions and extracorporeal circulation (i.e.pumps) by using catheters to implant a prosthetic valve after having first dilated the native valve.

The most eminent professionals in the field consider this procedure to be the future of cardiac surgery. This is why it is important to share surgeons’ operating theatre experiences internationally, to invest in resources such as hybrid rooms, which combine the resources of a cardiac surgery theatre with those of a hemodynamics room, and to allow doctors to explore new frontiers in heart care.
